Can AI sourcing replace a recruitment agency?

Partly. AI sourcing can take over the search part of agency work for recurring roles: finding candidates, ranking them with evidence, approaching them and following up, with your own recruiters doing the conversations. An agency stays the better choice for one-off, confidential or senior searches, and when you have no internal recruitment capacity to take over interested candidates.

What do you actually pay a recruitment agency for?

An agency fee covers more than finding names. A good agency searches the market, approaches candidates, sells your role, screens and interviews, presents a shortlist, advises on salary and market, and manages the process until someone signs. Some of that is search work. Some of it is judgement, relationships and negotiation.

The pricing reflects the outcome, not the hours. In the Netherlands, YoungCapital describes a typical recruitment fee of around 25% of the gross annual salary including holiday pay, within a range of roughly 20% to 35%, and notes that many agencies work on a no cure, no pay basis. As an illustration with that 25%: a hire at €50,000 gross per year including holiday pay costs about €12,500 in fees. For one hire that can be good value. For ten similar hires a year it becomes a fixed cost worth questioning.

Which part of agency work can AI sourcing take over?

The part that repeats. For recurring vacancies most agency effort goes into the same chain: understand the role, search, screen, approach, follow up. AIcruiters runs that chain as an agent. It separates hard requirements from preferences, searches through multiple routes, ranks every candidate against the full vacancy with evidence, and sends a personal message per candidate on LinkedIn. Positive replies go to your recruiter with the profile, the match rationale and the conversation history.

What it does not take over is equally important. AIcruiters does not interview, sell the role over the phone, negotiate an offer or decide who is hired. That means the alternative to an agency is software plus your own recruiters, which is why this works best for in-house talent acquisition teams that already have people to hold the conversations.

Agency and in-house AI sourcing side by side

When is a recruitment agency still the better choice?

More often than you might expect. Keep working with an agency when:

  • The search is senior or confidential. Replacing a director who does not know yet, or approaching board candidates, needs discretion and a network. That is the core of executive search.
  • It is a one-off in an unfamiliar market. If you hire one specialist in a field you never recruit in, an agency's market knowledge is worth more than a sourcing workflow you would set up once.
  • You have no one to take over. AIcruiters hands interested candidates to a recruiter. Without internal recruitment capacity, those conversations do not happen.
  • You need an employer, not just a candidate. With temporary staffing and secondment the agency often employs the worker and handles payroll. Sourcing software does not replace that.
  • You want advice as much as candidates. Salary benchmarks, market feedback on an unrealistic profile and help with the offer are real services.

What does a combined model look like?

You do not have to choose between agency and AI sourcing; you can divide the work. Recurring roles your recruiters understand well move in-house, sourced by the agent under your approval rules. Senior, confidential and one-off searches stay with an agency you trust. The result is fewer fees on predictable hires, and agency budget spent where an agency adds the most. Recruiters see every handover with the full context, so nothing depends on memory or spreadsheets.

  • Recurring roles: sourced in-house by the agent, conversations by your recruiters
  • Senior and confidential roles: agency
  • Every handover with profile, match rationale and conversation history
How approval rules work

Is this only for employers, or also for agencies?

Both. This page looks at AI sourcing from the employer's side, as an alternative to part of what you buy from agencies. But AIcruiters is built together with SocialFind, itself a recruitment agency, and agencies can use the same agent to source for their clients with fewer seats and sourcing hours. That use is described on the page for recruitment agencies.

If your team mainly uses LinkedIn Recruiter today rather than agencies, the overview of LinkedIn Recruiter alternatives is the better starting point.

How do you move part of your agency work in-house?

  1. 01

    List last year's agency hires

Group them by role type. Roles you filled more than once are the first candidates to bring in-house.

  2. 02

    Check your recruiter capacity

Someone needs to hold the conversations with interested candidates. Estimate how many hours that takes per vacancy.

  3. 03

    Test on one recurring role

Run it through AIcruiters with approval switched on for every step and compare the shortlist with what the agency delivered.

  4. 04

Put the numbers side by side

Agency fees for those roles against the business case for sourcing them in-house.

Questions about AI sourcing as an agency alternative

Can AI sourcing fully replace our agencies?

Rarely, and we would not advise it. It can take over the sourcing work for recurring roles where you have your own recruiters. Senior, confidential and one-off searches often stay better with an agency.

Do we need our own recruiters?

Yes. AIcruiters finds, ranks and approaches candidates, then hands positive replies to a recruiter. Interviews, selling the role and hiring decisions stay with people on your team.

Is it cheaper than an agency?

For recurring hires it can be, but it depends on your volume, salaries and current fees. There is no price list; we build a business case with your numbers and say so if it does not add up.

What happens to candidates who are not hired now?

Interested candidates are handed over to your recruiters with profile, ranking and conversation history. How that reaches your ATS is assessed per ATS, so you can agree up front how those candidates stay available for future vacancies.

How is candidate data handled?

Access, use and retention of candidate data are restricted per workflow. Hosting and privacy details are discussed in the technical review.
