Role playbook

How do you recruit electricians?

Recruit electricians by first choosing the specialism (building installation, industrial, infrastructure or inspection) and the qualification level the work legally requires. Search on trade titles in the local language, check qualifications and safety certificates early, and reach out with the facts electricians compare: type of projects, travel, van, hours, pay and overtime.

Which electricians are you actually looking for?

"Electrician" covers very different work. An installation electrician wires new homes and offices; an industrial electrician maintains control panels and drives in a factory; a cable jointer works on distribution networks; an inspector tests existing installations. Each has its own qualifications, pay levels and daily rhythm, and people rarely switch between them.

This page covers electricians and electrical technicians. For the wider group of mechanics, service technicians and installers across disciplines, see skilled trades; for degree-level electrical engineers who design systems, see engineers.

Which titles and synonyms should you search for?

Use the trade's own vocabulary, including local-language titles and seniority words used on site, such as "lead" or "first" electrician.

  • Installation: electrician, installation electrician, approved electrician, domestic electrician, commercial electrician, electrical fitter
  • Industrial: industrial electrician, maintenance electrician, electrical technician, panel builder, controls technician
  • Networks and infrastructure: cable jointer, substation technician, high voltage technician, overhead line worker
  • Inspection and testing: electrical inspector, testing and inspection engineer, periodic inspection electrician
  • Seniority: lead electrician, electrical supervisor, foreman electrician, apprentice or improver (for junior roles)

Which qualifications and skills matter, and which are noise?

Qualifications are often a legal or client requirement, so they belong in the hard requirements. Beyond that, the type of installation someone worked on predicts fit better than general years of experience.

In the UK, the ECS card shows an electrician's recognised qualifications; according to ECS, the BS 7671 wiring regulations qualification (18th Edition) is one of those shown on the Gold Card. In the Netherlands a NEN 3140 designation is issued in writing by the employer, so a new employer designates again.

Where are electricians online, and what makes them move?

Electricians are underrepresented on LinkedIn and, when present, profiles are short. The ones you find there are often supervisors, inspectors or self-employed. Combine LinkedIn with trade job boards, Facebook groups for electricians, trade schools and apprenticeship providers, wholesalers' notice boards, referrals from current staff and subcontractors you already work with. The sector context is on construction recruitment.

Motivation and objections

Electricians compare jobs on concrete terms: hourly rate and overtime, travel time and whether travel is paid, a company van, the kind of projects, a steady pipeline of work and a foreman who plans well. Growth into inspection, design or supervision is a strong draw for experienced people.

  • "Is travel paid, and do I take the van home?"
  • "I don't want to spend another year on repetitive fit-outs."
  • "I earn more self-employed."
  • "Every recruiter says there is plenty of work."

What does a boolean string for electricians look like?

Combine trade titles, add the installation type and exclude engineers and sales roles that share keywords. Example for a commercial installation role in the UK: (electrician OR "electrical fitter" OR "approved electrician" OR "installation electrician") AND (commercial OR "fit out" OR industrial) NOT (engineer OR sales OR estimator OR apprentice). Swap in the installation type of your own vacancy in the boolean search generator; the boolean search guide shows how to check that a NOT group does not remove good profiles.

  • Exclude "engineer" only if you do not want inspectors with engineer titles
  • Search qualifications as a separate OR group if profiles mention them
  • Keep location tight: most electricians work within a travel radius

How should you write to an electrician?

Short, plain and practical. Name the projects, the area, hours, pay basis and what is provided. Skip corporate language and long employer descriptions; a phone number or a quick call option works better than a link to an application form. The guide to LinkedIn outreach messages shows how to open with the project instead of the company.

What mistakes do recruiters make with electricians?

  • Mixing specialisms

An industrial maintenance electrician is not the answer to a domestic installation vacancy.

  • Not checking qualifications early

Missing a required qualification is discovered after the interview, wasting everyone's time.

  • Writing like an office job ad

Culture statements do not answer the questions about travel, van and pay.

  • Ignoring the self-employed

Many experienced electricians work for themselves. Say clearly what employment offers them.

How does AIcruiters automate electrician sourcing with human control?

Vacancy intelligence turns the vacancy into specialism, qualification, location and practical requirements. AIcruiters searches through several routes, removes duplicates and ranks electricians against the full vacancy with reasons, including which qualification is not visible on the profile. It sends short, practical LinkedIn messages in the tone you set and follows up. Your team checks certificates and decides on every hire.

Questions about recruiting electricians

Which qualifications should I check for an electrician?

The recognised trade qualification for the country and level of work, plus any card, designation or safety certificate the client requires. In the UK that is often the ECS card; in the Netherlands NEN 3140 roles and VCA.

Why are electricians hard to find on LinkedIn?

Many do not use it for work. Those who do are often supervisors or inspectors. Combine it with trade boards, referrals and training providers.

How do I compete with self-employed rates?

Be concrete about paid travel, van, steady work, training and pension. Many electricians value predictability once they compare the full picture.

Is a NEN 3140 designation transferable?

No. The employer designates staff in writing for specific work, so a new employer assesses and designates again.

Can AIcruiters check certificates?

No. It shows which requirements are visible on a profile and which are missing; your team verifies certificates.
