Role playbook

How do you recruit engineers?

Recruit engineers by pinning down the discipline, the product phase and the toolchain before you search: a mechanical design engineer in R&D is a different hire from a process engineer on a factory floor. Search on discipline titles plus domain and tools, check the products someone worked on, and reach out about the technical problem and the product.

Which engineers does this page cover?

This playbook is about degree-level engineers (bachelor or master) who design, develop and improve technical products and systems: mechanical, electrical and electronic, embedded software, systems, test and process engineers. For hands-on technicians who install and maintain equipment, see skilled trades. For application and web developers, see software engineers.

The boundary matters for sourcing because the word "engineer" is stretched. A "service engineer" is often a field technician; a "sales engineer" sells. Decide which one you need before you build a search, or half the results will be the wrong profession.

Which titles and synonyms should you search for?

Search on discipline plus phase. A design engineer, a development engineer and an R&D engineer can be the same job; a test engineer and a validation engineer often are. In the Netherlands and Germany add local titles, because many engineers use them.

  • Mechanical: mechanical engineer, design engineer, mechanical design engineer, R&D engineer, product development engineer, mechatronics engineer
  • Electrical and electronic: electrical engineer, electronics engineer, hardware engineer, PCB design engineer, power electronics engineer
  • Embedded: embedded software engineer, firmware engineer, embedded systems engineer, C++ embedded developer
  • System level: systems engineer, system architect, integration engineer, test and validation engineer
  • Production side: process engineer, manufacturing engineer, industrialisation engineer, automation engineer

Which skills matter, and which are noise?

The strongest signals are the products and constraints someone engineered for. Tool names matter only when the team really cannot switch.

Where are engineers online, and what makes them move?

Engineers are on LinkedIn, but often with short profiles that name the employer and not the product. Useful additional sources are university and applied science alumni networks, patents and publications, speaker lists of technical trade fairs, professional associations and the websites of high-tech suppliers that name their project teams. Many engineers in industrial regions stay close to home, so commuting distance is a real filter. The engineering recruitment page covers the sector side.

Motivation and objections

Engineers move for technical depth, a product they can be proud of, room to take responsibility for a design and a shorter commute. Pure salary moves are less common than in sales, but pay still has to be in range.

  • "Will I design, or only change drawings and maintain documentation?"
  • "I do not want to become a project manager."
  • "Seventy minutes each way is not worth it."
  • "Is this a real R&D role or a secondment through an agency?"

What does a boolean string for engineers look like?

Group discipline titles, require the domain or toolchain, and exclude the profiles that share the word engineer. Example for a mechanical design role in machine building: ("mechanical engineer" OR "design engineer" OR "R&D engineer" OR "mechatronics engineer") AND (SolidWorks OR "Siemens NX" OR Creo) AND (machine OR equipment OR "high tech") NOT (sales OR service OR student). Swap in your own CAD packages and domain words in the boolean search generator; the boolean search guide shows how to test a string on the first results.

  • Exclude service and sales when you need design engineers
  • Put CAD tools in an OR group: switching between them is common
  • Search domain words separately if profiles are short

What should outreach to an engineer say?

Name the product and the engineering problem, the phase of development, the location and the team. Engineers are sceptical of vague messages and of recruiters who confuse disciplines, so a precise first line earns more than a friendly one. The guide to LinkedIn outreach messages shows how to build a first line around someone's product work.

What mistakes do recruiters make with engineers?

  • Treating all engineers as one pool

A process engineer and a design engineer have different days, tools and ambitions.

  • Searching on the title "engineer" alone

It pulls in service technicians, sales engineers and software developers.

  • Overlooking commute

Many engineers will not move house for a job. Filter on realistic travel time early.

  • Asking for every tool

Requiring three CAD packages removes good candidates who would learn the third in weeks.

How does AIcruiters automate engineering sourcing with human control?

Vacancy intelligence turns the job into discipline, phase, domain and toolchain requirements and separates must-haves from preferences. AIcruiters then searches through several routes, removes duplicate and irrelevant profiles and ranks each candidate with reasons, including what is missing. Personal outreach and follow-up run within the rules your team sets.

  • Approval rules per action: search, selection, outreach, handover
  • Uncertain matches go to a recruiter
  • Positive replies arrive with profile, match reasons and history

Questions about recruiting engineers

What is the difference between an engineer and a technician?

Engineers usually design, calculate and develop; technicians install, maintain and repair. Titles overlap, so check the actual work on the profile.

Should I require a degree?

For roles where calculations, simulation or system design are core, often yes. Many strong engineers also grew from technician roles, so judge the work before filtering.

How important is the CAD package?

Less than most job ads suggest. Make it a hard requirement only if the team cannot support a switch.

Are embedded software engineers engineers or developers?

Both. Source them as engineers when hardware knowledge matters, and as developers when the work is mostly application code.

Can AIcruiters tell disciplines apart?

It ranks against the full vacancy and shows its reasons, including missing requirements. A service technician with an engineer title should therefore show up with the design experience missing, and a recruiter reviews uncertain cases.
