Role playbook
How do you source sales candidates?
Source sales candidates by defining the sales motion first (new business or account management, inbound or outbound, deal size, cycle length) and searching for people who sold in a comparable motion. Title variants matter less than what, to whom and how someone sold. Reach out with the commission plan, territory and product in plain numbers.

Why start with the sales motion instead of the title?
Because "Account Manager" can mean a hunter closing six-figure deals or a farmer renewing contracts by phone. The first sourcing question is not the title but the motion: does this person find new customers or grow existing ones, sell to SMB or enterprise, handle a three-week or a nine-month cycle, sell a product or a service?
Write that down with the hiring manager in four lines before you search. It turns a vague "good salesperson" into a profile you can actually match, and it prevents the most expensive sales mis-hire: a strong account manager placed in a cold outbound role.
Which titles and synonyms should you search for?
Sales titles are inconsistent between companies and countries, so search per motion and combine several variants. Include the local language where you hire: many Dutch and German sellers use local titles on their profiles.
- New business: account executive, business development manager, new business manager, sales executive, hunter
- Pipeline generation: SDR, sales development representative, BDR, business development representative, lead generator
- Existing accounts: account manager, key account manager, customer success manager, strategic account manager
- Field and inside sales: field sales, area sales manager, inside sales representative, territory manager
- Leadership: sales manager, head of sales, sales team lead, commercial director
Which signals predict sales performance, and which are noise?
Useful signals describe the conditions someone sold in. Self-reported rankings and adjectives describe how someone would like to be seen.
Quota numbers on profiles cannot be verified before the conversation. Use them as a question for the interview, not as a ranking factor.
Where are sales candidates online, and what moves them?
Salespeople are among the most active LinkedIn users: they prospect there themselves. That makes them easy to find and easy to saturate. Beyond LinkedIn, look at speaker lists of industry events, sales communities, partner and reseller directories, and the sales teams of competitors and adjacent vendors. For the broader market of commercial hiring, see sales recruitment.
Motivation and objections
Sellers compare offers on earning potential and on how realistic it is. They want to know base salary, on-target earnings, whether commission is capped, how territory and leads are assigned, and whether the product sells. Objections are practical and fast.
- "What is the OTE, and how many reps actually hit it?"
- "Do I get leads or am I cold calling from scratch?"
- "I just built my pipeline here; leaving means losing commission."
- "Another startup with no market fit."
What does a boolean string for sales candidates look like?
Combine the motion titles with the market you need and exclude the adjacent profiles that pollute results. Example for a mid-market new business role in software: ("account executive" OR "business development manager" OR "new business manager" OR "sales executive") AND (SaaS OR software) AND ("mid-market" OR B2B) NOT (recruitment OR "real estate" OR insurance OR intern). Adjust and test variants in the boolean search generator; the boolean search guide explains why short groups beat long ones.
- Exclude recruitment sales: agency recruiters often carry sales titles
- Run separate strings for hunters and account managers
- Add the local-language titles as their own OR group
What should outreach to a salesperson sound like?
Direct and commercial, because that is how sellers write themselves. Name the motion, deal size and earnings structure in the first message; a salesperson judges your pitch the way a buyer judges theirs. The guide to LinkedIn outreach messages has more structures to test.
What mistakes do recruiters make with sales hiring?
Hiring the best talker
Confidence on a call says little about pipeline discipline. Ask for a deal walk-through with numbers.
Filtering on industry only
A seller who knows the buyer and the cycle often ramps faster than one who knows the industry but sold differently.
Vague about compensation
"Attractive commission" gets no replies. State the structure.
Ignoring timing
Reps rarely leave just before a quarter or year end. Plan outreach and follow-up around it.
How does AIcruiters automate sales sourcing with human control?
AIcruiters starts from the vacancy: vacancy intelligence separates hard requirements such as motion and deal size from preferences such as industry. The agent searches through several routes, removes duplicates and ranks every candidate against the full vacancy with reasons, then writes a personal LinkedIn message per candidate through outreach automation and follows up consistently.
- Your team sets tone, messaging rules and approval steps
- Match reasons show why a candidate fits, and which requirement is missing
- Interested candidates are handed over with conversation history
- Recruiters make the selection and the hiring decision

Questions about sourcing sales candidates
Should I only hire salespeople from my own industry?
Not by default. A comparable buyer, deal size and sales cycle usually matter more than industry. Make industry a hard requirement only when the product needs deep domain knowledge.
How do I check quota claims?
You cannot before the conversation. Ask for attainment per year with team context and a walk-through of a won and a lost deal.
What is the difference between an SDR and an account executive?
An SDR or BDR generates and qualifies pipeline; an account executive runs the sales cycle and closes. Source them with different strings and different messages.
Why do sales candidates ignore recruiter messages?
Mostly because the message leaves out the numbers they care about: base, OTE, territory and leads. Sellers receive many messages and answer the ones that are concrete.
Can AIcruiters message sales candidates automatically?
Yes, on LinkedIn, within the tone and rules your team sets. You decide whether messages need approval before they are sent.
