Recruitment software for engineering: how AI sourcing works in technical hiring

In engineering, AIcruiters works as recruitment software that first pins down discipline, level and certificates, because "engineer" can mean a university-trained designer or a field service technician. It then searches on the work itself (products, machines, installations, software tools) rather than on one title, ranks on comparable technical complexity and approaches people about the project, within your approval rules.

How tight is the market for technical staff?

51
vacancies per 1,000 jobs in specialised business services, which include engineering firms (Q2 2026)

Why is "engineer" such a hard search term?

Because it covers completely different jobs. A service engineer usually maintains machines on site, a sales engineer sells technical products, a design engineer draws and calculates, and a software engineer writes code. Dutch adds its own layer: constructeur, werkvoorbereider, projectingenieur and technicus. The vacancy analysis splits the title into discipline, level, tasks and tools before any search runs.

  • Discipline: mechanical, electrical, process, civil, controls
  • Level: vocational (MBO), bachelor (HBO) or master (WO)
  • Work: design, commissioning, maintenance, project lead
  • Context: series production, one-off machines, installations, infrastructure

Where does engineering talent sit?

Engineers with a bachelor's or master's degree are usually findable on LinkedIn, often with detailed project descriptions. Technicians and installers are much less so; for them, see skilled trades and electricians.

Education as a map

Technical programmes say a lot: mechanical or electrical engineering at a university of applied sciences, a technical university master, or a vocational route with years of practice. Graduation projects and internships at known machine builders or installers are strong signals for junior profiles.

Certificates that decide who may do the work

On many sites a VCA safety certificate is a condition of entry. Work on electrical installations is organised according to NEN 3140, with designated roles such as instructed person or skilled person. Welding certificates, driving licences for field service and specific software certifications follow the same logic: check which ones the client really requires.

Professional networks

Engineering associations such as KIVI, alumni networks of technical universities, trade fairs and sector-specific groups are where engineers show what they work on.

Which requirements in an engineering vacancy are hard?

Engineering vacancies mix safety conditions, education and tool preferences in one list. Separating them widens the market without lowering the bar.

Requirement
Usually hard
Usually soft
Safety certificates
VCA or NEN 3140 role when the work requires it
Certificates that can be obtained in the first weeks
Education level
Master's or bachelor's for calculation-heavy design
Degree for roles where years of practice count more
CAD and software
Rarely
SolidWorks versus Inventor versus Creo; PLC brand
Product or industry
Regulated domains when that is the job
Same product type; comparable complexity usually transfers
Travel and shifts
Field service radius, driving licence, on-call duty
Office days for design roles

Where do engineering searches go wrong?

Besides the word "engineer" itself, a few pitfalls recur in almost every technical search.

  • Tool tunnel vision. Rejecting a strong constructeur because they work in Inventor, not SolidWorks, removes people who would be productive within weeks.
  • Title inflation and deflation. "Senior engineer" at one company is "engineer" at another; a "projectleider" may lead a team of twenty or none.
  • Bilingual titles. Dutch and English titles appear side by side, and a Boolean search that forgets one language misses half the market.
  • Mixing sectors. Machine building, installation technology and infrastructure use similar words for different work. See manufacturing and construction for their specifics.

How AIcruiters' five steps play out for an engineering vacancy

Illustrative example (fictional): a mechanical design engineer for a machine builder near Eindhoven, bachelor level, special-purpose machines.

  1. 01

    Vacancy analysis

Hard: bachelor in mechanical engineering or equivalent experience, design of one-off machines, 3D CAD, Dutch for workshop contact. Soft: SolidWorks specifically, food or pharma machines. Titles: design engineer, constructeur, mechanical engineer, ontwerper werktuigbouw.

  2. 02

    Market search

Routes per Dutch and English title, per CAD package and per type of machine builder within commuting distance. Service engineers and sales engineers are filtered out unless they show design work.

  3. 03

    Fit ranking

A constructeur with six years of special-purpose machines in Inventor ranks above a senior engineer from series production. The rationale lists the CAD gap as a soft point, not a blocker.

  4. 04

    Personal outreach

The message names the kind of machines, the design freedom, the ratio of drawing to calculating and time on the shop floor. Your team decides on approval.

  5. 05

    Follow-up and handover

Engineers who want to talk go to the recruiter with profile, match rationale and conversation, so questions about design freedom, travel or on-call duty are answered by someone who knows the client.

The example is illustrative; your criteria and approval rules decide what the agent does.

How do engineers want to be approached?

Concretely. Engineers want to know what they will design, build or maintain, with which tools, and how much travel or on-call work comes with it. A message that says "technical role at an innovative company" gets ignored; one that names the product, the project phase and the team gets read. Honesty about shifts, overtime and the physical side of the job builds trust, and so does showing you understand the difference between designing and maintaining.

For technicians and installers the practical conditions come first: travel distance, lease car or not, on-call schedule and certificate training. Read more on writing outreach messages.

Questions about engineering sourcing

Can AIcruiters tell a service engineer from a design engineer?

It ranks on the work described in the profile, not only on the title, and shows its reasoning. Profiles that are unclear can be routed to a recruiter for review.

Does it check certificates such as VCA or NEN 3140?

It can treat them as requirements and show whether a profile mentions them. Verifying the certificate itself stays with your recruiter or the employer.

Is it useful for technicians who are not on LinkedIn?

That depends on which talent sources are available in your setup, which is agreed per implementation. Technicians who leave little trace online are hard to find for any search, so combine sourcing with referrals, schools and job boards. See skilled trades.

Does this fit technical staffing and secondment?

Yes. Add availability, rates and contract type to the criteria. See AIcruiters for staffing agencies.
